Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill Gets a Vinyl Reissue

Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill reissue

-Brian Furman

The iconic Beastie Boys record, Licensed to Ill, is getting a 30th anniversary vinyl reissue, released to the masses on October 14th. The reissue is cut directly from the original masters and will be released via the Def Jam label. Licensed to Ill showcase the punk-leaning attitude and lyrics of the Beastie Boys, coupled with beats from the urban streets of New York City. The landmark album offers radio staples “(You Gotta) Fight, For Your Right (To Party!)”, “Brass Monkey” and, “No Sleep til Brooklyn”. It was the very first hip-hop album to land at #1 on the Billboard album chart in 1986, and helped drive a surge of hip-hop acts into the late 80’s mainstream including Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and Eric B, and Rakim. Licensed to Ill was one of the first albums to successfully bring hip-hop out of the urban underground and into mid-west America. The Beastie Boys have recorded a number of tremendous albums over their 30 year career including Paul’s Boutique, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty. The group was inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
