“Celebrating David Bowie” 2018 North American Tour Announced

Earlier this year, members of David Bowie’s various backing bands joined together for a limited series of shows honoring the singer on what would have been his 70th birthday. Word now comes that the project – titled “Celebrating David Bowie” – will hit the road next year for a full-fledged tour of North America. The project’s organizer and producer, Angelo Bundini (aka Scrote), says he and other participants were deluged with requests for more shows, even before the first series was launched.

“The last shows were about communities coming together to reflect on David and his music,” says Scrote, who also plays guitar in the project. “But David was famous for not being nostalgic, so this time we’re going to follow his lead by being more Bowie future than Bowie past. It’s the same beloved Bowie catalog, but a whole new approach that’s even more Bowie than our last shows.”

Other musicians scheduled to participate in the 2018 shows include King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew, bassist Carmine Rojas, guitarist Gerry Leonard, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, and longtime Bowie keyboardist Mike Garson, among others. As with the 2017 shows, it’s expected that an A-list of high-profile vocalists will take the stage for the 2018 concerts.

“I have worked with over 1000 singers but never anyone like David,” observes Garson, who began serving as Bowie’s keyboardist in 1972. “He had an infinite source of music flowing through him, and his creativity was boundless. His sharing of the stage with his musicians was extraordinary, and he was a team player. That is why we need many singers to encompass his work.”

Scrote promises some “amazing surprises,” while noting that the concerts will encompass the entire sweep of Bowie’s career. “I don’t like to give away too much detail,” he says, speaking with Rolling Stone, “but I will say that we will perform all the very biggest Bowie songs you’d expect plus many favorites we didn’t play last time, from Space Oddity all the way up to Blackstar. We’ll touch on everything one way or another.”
