Dave Davies Announces New Album, U.S. Tour

–Joe Lund

Legendary Kinks guitarist Dave Davies has announced a month-long U.S. summer tour in support of his forthcoming new album, Open Road. Written and produced in collaboration with his son, Russ, the LP is slated for release on March 31. The 12-city tour kicks off on April 6 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and wraps up on April 30/May 1 with a two-night stint at the City Winery in Nashville, Tennessee.

Speaking with Consequence of Sound, Davies said he and his son approached Open Road differently from their 2010 collaborative LP, The Aschere Project. Specifically, the new record features songwriting that’s much more conventional in nature. “This time we wanted to make a more song-oriented piece of work, with catchy hooks and emotional melodies,” said Davies, “so we decided on a more rocky-poppy approach more in the mainstream.”

Davies’ son, Russ, concurs. “We really just felt it was about time we made a song-based album together which a wider audience can relate to, rather than exploring another experimental concept,” he said. “Personally, after navigating between alternative sub-genres most of my career, I’ve come to realize that you can’t beat good, honest, traditional songs, and who better to collaborate with on this outing than Dave.”

Davies has issued an advance single from the album–a song titled “Path Is Long”–which you can listen to here. For more information about the tour—including dates, cities and venues–visit the official Dave Davies website.
