Duane Allman Retrospective Box Set to Make its Vinyl Debut

–Joe Lund

Duane Allman fans take note: next month, a special limited-edition vinyl edition of Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective will be released by Rounder Records. Originally issued in 2013 as a CD box set, the vinyl collection consists of 129 tracks spread across fourteen 180-gram LPs. Included in the package is a 56-page booklet featuring rare photos, plus essays by journalist Scott Schinder and Duane’s daughter, Galadrielle Allman. In addition, several previously unpublished photographs of the late guitarist will be featured on each of the LP sleeves.

Destined to be a collectible, the set will be limited to a production run of 1000 individually numbered copies. Moreover, Rounder has partnered with direct-to-fan platform leader PledgeMusic, who is offering special bundled packages available only to pledgers. Among the special packages is a “Super Deluxe Bundle” that includes one of 50 limited-edition, numbered LPs in a custom-printed Skydog shipping carton; a copy of Galadrielle’s book “Please Be With Me: A Song For My Father, Duane Allman,” signed and individually numbered by the author; and other extras.skydog_duane_allman_retrospectiveIn a prepared statement, Galadrielle Allman spoke glowingly of the collection, and of her father. “The Skydog retrospective tells my father Duane Allman’s life story in the fierce and melodic voice of his guitar,” she said. “From his earliest high school strivings to the stunning virtuosity he finally achieved, it is all here. Being part of this project has deepened my understanding of who my father was, and he was remarkable. I hope it will do the same for all who listen. This collection deserves to be heard on vinyl, still the warmest and richest format there is.  I’m so proud it was possible.”
