Eric Clapton to Release New Album, Live in San Diego

–Joe Lund

Back in 2007, Eric Clapton and his good friend and mentor JJ Cale teamed up casually to support their 2006 collaborative album, Road to Escondido. Now, on September 30, Clapton will release a live album that documents their special partnership. Recorded on March 15, 2007, Live in San Diego features Cale joining Clapton for several tracks – including the classic Cale-written hits “Cocaine” and “After Midnight.” Other guests include Derek Trucks (who plays Duane Allman’s parts on the Derek and the Dominos material), Doyle Bramhall II, and Robert Cray.

“This is the realization of what may have been my last ambition: to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember,” Clapton said of Cale, at the time of Road to Escondido’s release. Cale passed away in July of 2013. Below is a video performance from the show, followed by the Live in San Diego track list.
