Forty years have passed since the Sex Pistols released their 1977 studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. On October 27, the LP’s anniversary will be commemorated with a reissue of the super deluxe edition of this landmark record. Originally released in 2012 as a limited edition set, the out-of-print collection offers a comprehensive look at one of the most important bands of the late ‘70s punk rock era.

The budget-priced reissue consists of three CDs — the original studio album; a disc of demos, B-sides, rough mixes, and other studio rarities; and another disc featuring live material from 1977. Additionally, the package includes a DVD featuring video footage from the band’s “boat party” performance staged on the River Thames in London in 1977, plus promo videos and other live footage from that same year.

The collection also features a 48-page hardback book with narrative from music journalist Pat Gilbert, plus rare photos from Bob Gruen, Barry Plummer, John Tiberi and Dave Wainwright.

Speaking with this writer about his current band, PIL, in 2012, frontman John Lydon expressed a philosophy that could be applied to his work with the Sex Pistols.

“When I feel an emotion … I have to express that in a song,” he said. “It’s the only relief I get. I find great joy in doing that. It’s cathartic. It’s like shout therapy. And it works. Quiet people should learn to yell and shout, so that they don’t turn into psychopathic killers. When you repress thoughts, and you don’t understand your emotions, that becomes a problem.”
