Tom Petty- 2017 MusiCares Person of the Year
Three-time Grammy winner, Tom Petty, has been announced as the 2017 MusiCares Person of Year. The award will be given at the 27th annual benefit gala two nights prior to the 59th annual Grammy awards in Los Angeles. Petty has long been a pillar in the music community for defending artists rights, as well as offering a long list of charitable work amassed throughout his 40 year career, most notably working with the homeless population in and around LA.
Petty rose to stardom in the 70’s with his band The Heartbreakers, releasing multiple age-defining records including; 1979’s Damn the Torpedoes, 1989’s Full Moon Fever, and 1994’s Wildflowers. His last record 2015’s Hypnotic Eye, charted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Tom Petty was inducted into the Songwriting Hall of Fame as well as the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame class of 2002 alongside the Heartbreakers.
MusiCares was established in 1989 by The Recording Academy as a way to help lifelong musicians cover financial obligations, medical, and living expenses in their time of need. The organization offers nationwide educational programs covering a variety of subjects including legal, medical, and substance abuse issues. The organization focuses resources and attention of the music community on human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of music community.
