ZZ Top Announce 2017 “Tonnage” Tour

–Joe Lund

ZZ Top are preparing to kick off their 2017 “Tonnage” tour. As announced earlier this week, the trek begins on Feb. 19 in Greenville, S.C., and runs through several cities in the South, Northeast and Midwest. The Tonnage tour comes in the wake of the release of ZZ Top’s latest album, Live! Greatest Hits from Around the World. The album features 15 tracks culled from shows staged on three continents, and includes two collaborations recorded with guitar great Jeff Beck, in Beck’s native London.

“We spend the biggest stretch of every year out on the road, whippin’ wire, poundin’ skin, and rockin’ it way up,” said singer/guitarist Billy Gibbons, in a prepared statement earlier this year. “This collection is a definitive chronicle of the band hangin’ together for four-plus deluxe decades, getting down to do what we get to do.”

Indeed, among ZZ Top’s many honors and achievements – including their 2004 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – the trio boasts the greatest longevity with a single lineup in the history of rock music. Speaking for himself, bassist/singer Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, Gibbons promises the Tonnage tour will find the “Little Ol’ Band from Texas” in fine form. “It’s gonna be a good time,” he says. “We’ve been at this long enough that we’re starting to get good. Come and see us; it’s gonna be loud and live.”
